ART OF ANOTHER KIND

Some people are surprised to learn that works done in pastels are actually paintings. They are called paintings for the same reason that works done in oil or acrylic are paintings. The colors are applied to a "canvas" individually and blended on the canvas to present subtleties in both color and design just as they are with oils and acrylics. Pastel paintings are very fragile as it does not dry as do oils. Great care must be taken to insure they do not smudge. Fixing is the process of spraying the pastel surface with a fixative to help prevent smudging. Some artist do not like to do this as they feel that the colors become distorted as a result.

When framing pastels, plexi-glass or any type of acrylic should never be used in place of glass. Plexi-glass is very prone to static electricity which results in literally pulling the pastel off of the canvas.

To frame your pastel painting, consider the image area to be seen. Sometimes an artist will have pencil lines around the outer edges as a guide to paint within. Usually these lines will be matted over and so not be seen when the piece is framed. Measuring the image area is normally done to the nearest 1/8". Matting serves the duel purpose of both protecting and enhancing the art work. Matting protects the paper art from exposure to the environment, keeps it from sticking to the glass and helps to draw color and detail from the art. In addition, we recommend that a spacer or lift mat be used so as to catch any pastel dust that may loosen. This prevents the dust from collecting on the mat edge. If no matting is desired then plastic spacers should be used for the same reasons. Never should a pastel be framed so that the image is in direct contact with the glass.
